#historicmuseum #historylab #forest #climatechange #menandforests MEN AND WOODS episode 13 THE BARK BEET Storm Vaia, in addition to causing significant direct damage, created the conditions for the spread of the bark beetle, a small beetle naturally present in spruce forests across the Alps. The Ips thypographus, better known as the bark beetle, is a small, cylindrical, brown insect, about 4-5 mm long. It is endemic to the forests of Trentino and primarily attacks spruce, where it develops under the bark, burrowing geometric tunnels that disrupt the flow of sap and rapidly kill the tree. The presence of large quantities of damaged trees scattered throughout the forests has allowed the bark beetle population to transition from an endemic to an epidemic presence. For this reason, immediately after Storm Vaia, the Province of Trento activated, in collaboration with the Mach Foundation, an extensive system for monitoring the insect's populations. In this episode of "Men and Woods," Cristina Salvatori, a researcher at the Edmund Mach Foundation, and Chief Forestry Brigadier Roberto Ragucci take us through a typical day in their work monitoring and controlling this invasive insect.
