Islam first came to China around 30 AH or 651 AD. This is confirmed in Chen Yuen's book, *A Brief Study of the Introduction of Islam to China*. It is said that Islam entered China through envoys sent by Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, who ruled for 12 years, or from 23-35 AH (644-656 CE). Meanwhile, according to the records of Lui Tschih (刘志), an 18th-century Chinese Muslim writer, in his work "Chee Chea Sheehuzoo" (On the Life of the Prophet), Islam was brought to China by a group led by Saad ibn Abi Waqqas. Other accounts state that Islam first arrived in China brought by the great Islamic commander, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, along with other companions in 616 CE. Along with his companions, Saad came bearing gifts and was warmly received by the Tang Dynasty emperor, Kao-Tsung (650-683). However, Islam as a religion was not immediately accepted by the emperor. After a thorough investigation, the emperor granted permission for the development of Islam, which he deemed compatible with the teachings of Confucius. After his first visit, Saad He then returned to Arabia. He returned to China 21 years later, during the reign of Uthman ibn Affan, bringing a copy of the Quran. On his second visit in 650 AD, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas returned to China by sailing through the Indian Ocean to the China Sea to the port of Guangzhou. He then sailed to Chang'an, now known as Xi'an, via the route that later became known as the Silk Road. Along with his companions, Saad arrived bearing gifts and was warmly received by the Tang Dynasty emperor, Kao-Tsung (650-683).
