Song: Shallows Album: If You Leave Original Release Date: 2013 Label: 4AD (U.K.) / Glassnote (U.S.) Synopsis: The Shallows isn't a place in our reality. It's a land typified of purgatory, in which the self /soul finds. It is a place of death and rebirth, conflict and resolve, old and new. The video portrays a girl, the representative 'soul', at different stages of life, be it age, personality, emotion. As the video continues, the journey one experiences in the process of self-renewal is documented through allegory and symbolism. The Shallows is a sanctuary between the good and bad, a no man's land of escape from fear, love lost, loss of control, etc. The flowers sacrificed at the start of the video are the old habits, ways, thoughts, burdens and in the end, new white roses bloom from the clear waters to signify rebirth or a new beginning. The dichotomy of black and white illustrate these stages and struggles. Ultimately, I tried to encapsulate the mood and tones Elena and the band created musically into a piece that is as visually interesting and sentimental as the song is. I own nothing except the video/creation of it.
