Dzwirzyno from the drone | Dzwirzyno from the bird's eye view | Poland ▸Dzwirzyno is located 13 kilometers from Kołobrzeg, between the shores of the Baltic Sea and Lake Resko Przymorskie, on the strait connecting these waters - called the Resko Channel. Dźwirzyno is known for one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast and one of the cleanest sea bathing areas. A wide beach - made of tiny, clean and light grains of sand, it turns towards the land into a high dune embankment, reaching up to 16 meters above sea level. Dunes covered with pine forests are an attractive element of the local landscape. The town is located along one main street Wyzwolenia. It is worth stopping there longer, for example for the sixteen more than 250-year-old English oaks that grow here. Dźwirzyno has a modern port, a windsurfing and yacht marina. The town was first recorded in the chronicles in 1228, and the name of the town probably derives from the Slavic word "dżwirze" meaning door, gate. Its history is inseparably connected with the fate of the local lake. A thousand years ago, the waters of the Rega - the longest river on the Polish coast - flowed entirely into Lake Resko, and from there they flowed into the sea through the Regoujście Strait. Regoujście was located near today's Mrzeżyno and there is an important commercial port here. Under the management of the authorities of Trzebiatów, it even competed with the port in Kołobrzeg. In 1456, the Kołobrzeg was attacked by armed forces, sinking ships with a load of stones anchored in the port. In this way, Trzebiatów was cut off from the sea. The Resko Canal did not exist at that time, and in the vicinity of Dźwirzyno, the Moska shore and the lake were divided by a natural spit. In 1497, during a powerful weekly storm, the Dzwirzyń spit was broken. A port could have been built here, but the times of prosperity have not returned. Dźwirzyno remained a small fishing village. For centuries, its inhabitants lived quietly, modestly and peacefully. In the nineteenth century, holidaymakers began to come here. The village became a fishing base and a recreation center. A souvenir from the holiday can be an impressive cup funded by the commune administrator for taking the first place in the sports competitions held here. The "Run to the Sun", which takes place on the beach between Grzybowo and Dźwirzyno, has its supporters. No one needs too much encouragement to take part in beach volleyball or royal chess tournaments. Motor-hang gliders float above the beach, and windsurfing enthusiasts float on the waves of the Baltic Sea. Almost every holiday resort has tennis courts, pitches for team games and bowling alleys. In 1978 Dźwirzyno obtained the status of a health resort. Here, diseases of the respiratory and circulatory systems are treated. Healing stays are becoming more and more popular. Although most resorts are open in high season, it is worth visiting outside of it. How beautiful it is in Dźwirzyno during autumn storms or in winter, it is difficult to describe in words.
