Make Personal Care Kits: Lutheran World Relief Instructional Video

Thank you for showing God’s love to your neighbors near and far by assembling Personal Care Kits! In this video, Martha Piedrasanta and Mary Tereszkiewcz from Lutheran World Relief’s Quilt & Kit Ministry share helpful tips and guidelines for assembling Personal Care Kits. These kits provide dignity and hope to those in need, and they’re always in high demand. What’s in a Personal Care Kit? A sturdy, wide-tooth comb that works on all hair types, with packaging removed. Examples are shown in the video. One nail clipper, either fingernail clipper OR toenail clipper, with packaging removed. Nail clippers that have an attached file are acceptable. A toothbrush in its original packaging. If you have a multipack of toothbrushes, separate them and place each toothbrush in a business size envelope (no plastic baggies or wrap) and seal it to keep it sanitary. Toothbrushes from the dentist’s office are acceptable but cannot contain any personal contact information like phone numbers or addresses. Two bath size bars of soap totaling at least 8 ounces. If you can’t find 4oz bars, put in three bath size bars.  Do not use small hotel size bars. Soap needs to be store-bought and in its original packaging. Gentle soap is preferred. One lightweight bath-size towel. Towels must be new, with tags and packaging removed and anywhere in the size range of 20” to 27” wide by 40” to 52” long. Darker colors are preferred. What NOT to include: Washcloths, hairbrushes, dental floss, toothpaste, or any additional items not on the list. Martha and Mary also share how to fold and secure your kit to ensure it stays intact during transit. Ribbon or yarn is recommended for tying, as rubber bands may break during shipping.
