Aquaponics is a food production system that combines the raising of aquatic animals (aquaculture) with the cultivation of plants in water (hydroponics) by continuously recirculating water through the two subsystems. This technique saves space, water, and energy, and reduces or eliminates waste from the system into the environment, as everything is recycled. Healthier, more vigorous, and better-tasting production of both vegetables and fish is achieved while respecting the environment. Aquaponic systems can be scaled to any size, for both private and industrial use. Furthermore, this new production method promotes job creation and facilitates self-consumption and the local distribution of fresh, healthy products. The principle of aquaponics is based on the fact that the waste produced by an aquatic organism, usually fish or crustaceans, is converted through the action of bacteria into nutrients necessary for plant growth. During this process, known as nitrification, essential bacteria belonging to the genera Nitrosomona and Nitrobacter intervene. Thanks to Nitrosomonas bacteria, ammonium from fish waste and feed is converted into nitrites, and nitrites are in turn transformed into nitrates by Nitrobacter bacteria. These nitrates are then absorbed directly by the plants, which serve as biological filters in the system, purifying the water that returns to the fish pond. History of Aquaponics The use of fish excrement to fertilize plants has existed for millennia, with Asia and South America being the first civilizations to apply this method. About 900 years ago, the Aztecs in Mexico planted terraced crops on Lake Texcoco to take advantage of the water and organic matter produced by the decomposition of fish waste and microalgae at the bottom of the lake.
