Virology Lectures 2021 #25 - Therapeutic Viruses
It seems fitting that for the last lecture of this virology course that we explore the use of viruses to treat or prevent human disease. Basic virology research has provided a fundamental understanding about viral genomes, replication, and interaction with the host that together with clinical research has created the growing field of therapeutic virology. In this lecture we describe different viruses used for gene therapy, how they are produced, and examples of their use for vaccines, monogenic gene therapy, and viral oncotherapy. I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this YouTube channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more. New videos are uploaded multiple days a week. I don’t monetize my videos because it’s disruptive to learning.
