Is Business School Still Worth It in Age of AI? (A Former Stanford GSB Admissions Director's Take)
Application volumes are down at many top MBA programs, and a wave of AI-era takes claim business school is becoming less relevant — or that the opportunity cost is too high. I think the opposite is true, and in this video I'll explain why, drawing on two decades developing leadership programs at Stanford GSB. I break down three levels of learning — episodic, developmental, and transformative — and make the case that a full-time MBA is one of the only environments that can produce truly transformative learning: the kind that doesn't just add a skill, but changes how you see problems and what you're capable of pursuing. As AI commoditizes technical and analytical execution, the integrative skills an MBA builds — synthesizing across functions, leading through ambiguity, making judgment calls with incomplete information — are becoming more valuable, not less. I also address the "optionality" critique directly (the idea that two years out of the workforce limits your flexibility) and explain why I think business school is actually the highest point of career flexibility most people will ever have. This is part one of a series on how to think clearly about business school. Part two will cover how to choose where to apply — the criteria that actually matter, beyond rankings. 🔗 Free resources and an AI-powered platform to help you apply more strategically: https://mbai.app 👇 Have doubts about whether business school makes sense for you?
