The formal change-of-command ceremony occurred at the South Block lawns in New Delhi, where General Seth took over the leadership of the 1.3 million-strong force from General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after a distinguished career lasting over forty years of devoted service. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, General Seth was commissioned into the 2nd Lancers (Gardner's Horse) Armoured Corps in December 1986, becoming the first officer from the Armoured Corps to command the Indian Army since 1997. Throughout a notable military career lasting almost forty years, General Seth has gained substantial operational and strategic knowledge across essential areas. He possesses the unique professional distinction of having led two distinct operational formations along the western front—the South Western Command in Jaipur and the Southern Command in Pune—before his promotion to Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
