ADHD Medication - Part 1: Stimulants
In this video (part 1 of 2), I talk about stimulant medications used to treat ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). The different medications reviewed are: amphetamine/dextroamphetamine (Adderall XR and IR), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), methylphenidate (Concerta and Ritalin IR, SR, and LA), and dexmethylphenidate (Focalin IR and XR). My aim of the video is to help others understand the differences between these drugs and what they do. Hopefully it can help you decide which medication would be right for you, but please be sure to discuss this with your doctor or PCP! For each medication, I go over the mechanism of action, different versions, doses, how long it takes to kick in, how long it lasts, and the effects it has on your body (both positive and negative/adverse effects... such as enhanced focus and attention, energy, insomnia, nausea, and decreased appetite.) Each of these medications affect neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine by either blocking/inhibiting reuptake or increasing their production. Please note that I am NOT a doctor. I have just personally have ADHD and have taken Adderall XR & IR and Vyvanse. I also put in hours of research and information-gathering to create this video. I will post links to relevant information-rich websites in the comments.
