On Day 61, in Kunming, I began to better prepare myself for traveling around China. First, I needed to find a local SIM card for internet access. I assumed there would be a SIM card shop at the border, but that wasn't the case at the Laos-China border. Furthermore, I didn't pass through any Chinese money changers or ATMs at the border, so my cash (yuan) was also very low. The first night I was able to stay in a hotel by booking online. I thought the next morning I could find China Telecom or a bank near the hotel, which was located in a high-rise building. But there weren't any. Furthermore, Google Maps (accessed via VPN) wasn't very accurate, and internet connection outside the hotel was also difficult because we didn't have local SIM cards. Even if there were shops, I wouldn't be able to buy anything because I didn't have cash and couldn't use a card. Finally, I walked to the train station and used my last yuan to buy an MRT ticket to the city center. There was a large mall, Spring City 66, right there. I also looked for a camera, and sure enough, payments with an Indonesian card (I use a Jenius Visa card) weren't accepted. I was forced to walk to the front to find a Bank of China to withdraw money from a Visa ATM. Amazingly, there are no withdrawal fees for foreign bank cards! From there, I went to China Telecom and bought a local card. Finally, I could surf the internet freely, and the VPN I'd downloaded before entering China worked (the local card also worked for WeChat registration). I continued walking to find lunch at McDonald's, which, it turns out, doesn't accept cash! It was confirmed that China is a cashless society, and it's difficult to survive without Alipay or WeChatpay (foreigners have a hard time signing up!). Fortunately, despite the many difficulties for foreign tourists in China, there are still ways around them. After everything was settled, I relaxed in the evening and strolled along Nanping Pedestrian Street.
