I went on an afternoon hike at the Upper Alabama Hills Trail to Cyclops Skull Arch, covering 10.4 miles with 1,240 feet of elevation gain. This trail is an absolute gem, especially in winter, when the contrast between the desert landscape and the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains creates a magical scene. One of the best things about hiking here in winter? The weather is perfect—not too hot like in summer, making it a great time to explore. And of course, seeing Mount Whitney standing tall in the distance the entire time? Just incredible. Alabama Hills is more popular for off-road driving and rock climbing, so the hiking trails are almost empty. In fact, I didn’t see a single person the entire day—just me, the desert, and the mountains. It was so peaceful. The rock formations here are insane, shaped over millions of years by wind and erosion. These granite formations date back around 85 million years, sculpted by natural forces into unique arches and boulders—including the famous Cyclops Skull Arch. I spent the whole day here, from morning to evening, completely alone, just soaking in the silence and beauty of this incredible landscape. There’s something about being surrounded by nature like this—it’s peaceful, healing, and just what I needed. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend hiking here—especially in winter.
