A Fundamental Skill in the Wheelwright Trade | Engels Coach Shop

Hot shrinking wagon and buggy tires is an ancient trade of the the wheelwright. Working with the natural expansion and contraction properties of steel, through the use of heat and cooling, the final strength in wood wheels is the hot shrinking of the tires. Using the calculation of 2 tenths of 1%, the circumference of the steel tires are undersized from the circumference of the wood wheels, expanded with heat for expansion, and once assembled onto the wheels, is contracted by the cooling effects of water to obtain a strong, functional wheel that will run for years.
