For related queries, please contact [email protected] At an altitude of 2,700m, the remote and idyllic Tang Valley is one of the four valleys of Bumthang. Terton (treasure discoverer) Pema Linga, the famous saint was born in this valley hence its of great religious and historical significance. Located at approx. 1.1/2-hour drive from the central Choekhor valley of Bumthang, Tang Valley truly picturises another world preserved in its magical purity. Culturally & historically famed, The Ogyen Choling Museum opened for visitors in May 2001 and represents a precious heritage. Visitors here can view traditional living quarters, store room, granaries and other rooms which have been recreated to capture the ‘near realistic’ ambience of the lifestyles and living conditions of households of the religious nobility of Bhutan during the 19th & 20th centuries. Exhibits include utilitarian everyday utensils, tools and implements as well as examples of artistic expressions through art work and crafts. The exhibits are grouped into 18 specific themes. Ground floor: Here there is only one exhibit, The emergency grain store. First floor: Themes showcased on this floor are, Agriculture in Tang valley, Trade, Tools and implements, Grain stores, kitchen and Store room. Second floor: Themes displayed on this floor are, Photographs of the annual ritual of Kangso over the last 50 years, Arms and armour, Miscellaneous items, Bedroom and Living-cum-administrative room. Third floor: This floor is mainly used for displaying religious and ritual objects with following themes, Dance costumes and ritual objects, Masks and musical instruments for rituals, Store room for bamboo and rattan ware, Library and Printing room. The Utse Lhakhang, the chapel dedicated to the Buddha of long life, Tsepamey (Amitayus), is also on this level. The Ogyen Choling nagtshang (manorial house belonging to the aristocracy) is of considerable importance for Bhutan as well to the Tibetan Buddhists, because of its association with the great Tibetan masters: Longchecn Rabjam and Dorji Linga. The estate provides an excellent insight into the life styles and living conditions of a typical landed family in the last century. The heirs of Ogyen Choling nagtshang, therefore decided to convert parts of their ancestral home into a museum with purpose of sharing this heritage with as many people as possible and at the same time preserve and maintain it as a religious and cultural centre. Ogyen Choling is a village in the upper part of the Tang Valley and to reach here visitors need to cross the Tangchu suspension bridge near Kizom and climb up to the village for about 45 minutes while Kizom is located approx. 33km from the heart of Bumthang town.
