It is the only ancient temple that commands a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean. In his youth, Kūkai practiced austere asceticism in a cave at the foot of this mountain. Upon attaining enlightenment, he opened his eyes to behold the vast, majestic swells of the Pacific stretching endlessly before him—thus he received the Dharma name “Kūkai,” meaning “Sea of Emptiness.” In the year 807, after returning from his quest for the Dharma in Tang China, Kūkai was commissioned by Emperor Saga to build this temple atop the promontory of Cape Muroto. For pilgrims from all corners of the world, Saigozaki-ji is far more than a temple; it is a hallowed ground where one retraces the footsteps of the great master. Here, practitioners gaze upon the boundless seascape of the Pacific, seeking to commune with the profound state of “emptiness” and “ocean” that Kūkai once realized. It was here that I was caught in a sudden spring shower. A fierce, piercing mountain wind howled through the peaks, while delicate threads of rain fell ceaselessly. The newly blossomed cherry flowers trembled and danced in the storm, as if time itself had paused, gently washing away the accumulated dust of the heart.
