When the Adventure Ends, the Story Doesn't
The bards all end it at the throne room ā final blow, cheering crowd, close the book. But the throne room was a Tuesday. Thirty years later, a new party asked for wisdom: "Saving the world takes a season. LIVING in it after ā that takes the rest of your life. And that's the part that was the point. The story doesn't end. It just gets MORE PEOPLE in it." šµ "When the Adventure Ends, the Story Doesn't" ā an original D&D anthem about the epilogue being longer and better than the book LYRICS: The bards all end it at the throne room ā final blow, the cheering crowd, roll the credits, close the book. But I was THERE, and I'll say loud what the ballads always cut: the throne room was a Tuesday. The STORY was what everybody DID with all the years the victory bought (the ballads end at the door) (the story walks through it) 'Cause when the adventure ends, the story doesn't ā it just changes tools: the sword becomes a plowshare, and the war camp becomes schools And the party scatters outward like a dandelion head When the adventure ends, the story doesn't: count the seeds instead ā count EVERYTHING that grew where we stopped fighting The wizard runs the Academy (his cat approves the syllabus) The rogue's the locksmith guild-master ("keeping honest folk in practice") (she finally picked THAT lock) (year nine) (the vendor came to watch) (there was cake) Korvak's yoga fills the meadow; the healer's soup fills the Dread Chef's inn And me? I fixed a mill once. Then a bridge. Then a district. Then I stopped counting and just kept a toolbox by the door (the door is open) (Snik carved the sign) (of course he did) And last spring the young ones found us ā a new party, first quest, green as we were ā and asked for wisdom at the tavern (our tavern) (The Second Optimist) (long may she stand) (a MONTH, minimum): "You saved the world. What's the secret? For when it's our turn?" And we looked at one another ā thirty years of looks ā and the fighter spoke for all: "Kids. Here's the whole of it. Saving the world takes a season. You'll do it. You're the type. We can tell. But LIVING in it after ā planting it, mending it, teaching it, showing up on Tuesdays, keeping one lamp lit, learning what the mug is ā THAT takes the rest of your life, and THAT'S the part they don't write ballads for, and THAT'S the part that was the point. ...So go. Save it. Come back. We'll keep your table. The stew's on Thursdays. The story doesn't end. It just gets MORE PEOPLE in it." When the adventure ends, the story doesn't ā look around this room: every scar became a lesson, every ruin came to bloom And the new kids left at sunrise with our old map (waterfalls marked) (all eleven) When the adventure ends, the story doesn't: it compounds, it branches, it sets tables ā thirty years past the throne room and the story's never been LONGER or more crowded or more HOME (the lamp is lit) (the door is open) (the stew's on Thursdays) (bring the new kids) (bring everyone) šµ Music: Suno AI šØ Visuals: Midjourney āļø Lyrics & Production: Claude #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #TTRPGmusic #EmotionalMusic #FolkAnthem #DnDmusic #TabletopRPG #Epilogue #FoundFamily #ThisIsWhyWePlay
