For almost 70 years, the Emmaüs charity has been operating in the country, creating unique communities in which the poorest and most socially isolated live and work together—collecting, repairing, and selling used items for pennies. By helping others, they regain their sense of purpose and self-worth. Here, for a very modest price, you can buy chic vintage tableware, exquisite antique and modern furniture, ceramic figurines, retro lamps and light fixtures, kitchenware, tableware, electrical appliances and equipment, books on interior design and decor, toys, and vinyl records. In short, there's a lot to choose from; the main thing is to find treasures from among the junk. Emmaus associates receive shelter, food, and social support. They work without a contract and receive no wages, only a community allowance. However, since 2010, they have had the official status of "solidarity worker," which guarantees them the right to health insurance and pensions in France. Abbé Pierre, a Catholic priest and advocate for the poor and homeless, was at the origins of the Emmaus movement.
