Fath e Makkah Ep 23 | Why Khalid ibn al-Walid Fought Despite Orders During Fath Makkah

During the historic Conquest of Mecca (Fath Makkah), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered the city with nearly ten thousand Muslims. His goal was not revenge or destruction, but peace, mercy, and the end of idol worship in Mecca. After years of persecution, exile, torture, and war by Quraysh, many expected a massive battle. Instead, the Prophet ﷺ announced that no fighting should take place unless Muslims were attacked first. The Prophet ﷺ divided the Muslim army into different groups and assigned commanders to enter Mecca from various directions. One of those commanders was Khalid ibn al-Walid, the brilliant military leader known for his courage and battlefield skill. The Prophet ﷺ clearly instructed the Muslim army to avoid bloodshed and not begin fighting. However, when Khalid ibn al-Walid entered Mecca from the lower side of the city, a group from Quraysh, including hardened fighters from Banu Bakr and other enemies of Islam, decided to resist. They attacked Khalid’s forces with swords and arrows despite the Prophet’s order for peace. At that moment, Khalid ibn al-Walid and the Muslim soldiers defended themselves. A fierce but short battle broke out. According to historical reports, around seventy to eighty men from the attacking side were killed during the clash, while only a few Muslims were martyred. The resistance quickly collapsed, and the rest of Quraysh surrendered. Some people later wondered whether Khalid ibn al-Walid had disobeyed the Prophet ﷺ by fighting. Historical sources explain that Khalid did not start the battle on his own. He fought because his forces were attacked first, and self-defense became necessary. The Prophet ﷺ had forbidden unnecessary violence, but he had also allowed Muslims to respond if Quraysh initiated combat. This incident shows the remarkable mercy of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the conquest. Even after years of suffering at the hands of Quraysh, he wanted Mecca to be conquered with as little bloodshed as possible. Most of the city surrendered peacefully, and general amnesty was announced for the people of Mecca. The bravery of Khalid ibn al-Walid during this tense moment also demonstrated why he became one of the greatest military commanders in Islamic history. The clash was not fought for revenge, but as a response to armed resistance during one of the most important moments in Islamic history.
