In 1657, George II Rákóczi, Prince of Transylvania, marched on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, believing that the exhausted state would only need a push to collapse. After a Cossack rebellion, a war with Muscovy, and the Swedish Deluge, a third blow was to come—Rákóczi's invasion. In this film, I tell the story of the Transylvanian Expedition, the Treaty of Radnot, plans for the partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Rákóczi's march for the Polish crown. It is a story of political hubris, betrayal, war, plunder, miscalculation, and one of the most humiliating defeats of the 17th century. Rákóczi was no ordinary invader. He entered the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as an ally of Sweden and a candidate for the throne. He hoped that the nobility would choose peace, the cities would open their gates, and John Casimir would become the last king of a lost era.
