Cadal ann an Dualchas nan Gàidheal | An t-Oll. Meg Bateman
Bha mi air mo bhrosnachadh le pàipear Geraldine Parsons air ‘Cotail bécan bécan béc’ san t-sreath seo de dh'òraidean a bhith a’ ceasnachadh dè tha cadal a’ samhlachadh ann an dùthchas nan Gàidheal. Tha an rannsachadh agam aig ìre thràth fhathast, ach thèid agam air eisimpleirean a thaisbeanadh tro na linntean de chadal mar shlighe do bhruadaran anns an nochd eòlas dìomhair, mar neartachadh ghaisgeach ro shabaid, no mar fhosadh sa bheatha anns an tig atharrachadh agus ath-ùrachadh. Faighnichidh mi a bheil ceangal eadar a leithid agus samhlachas leatromachd ro bhreith, oidhche ron latha, no geamhradh ron t-samhradh. TIOTAL AN T-SEIMINEIR: Cadal ann an Dualchas nan Gàidheal ÒRAIDICHE: An t-Oll. Meg Bateman, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Chaidh an seiminear seo a chlàradh air 26 Màrt 2025 mar phàirt de shreath sheiminearan rannsachaidh aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. _____ Inspired by Geraldine Parsons’ paper in this lecture series on Gráinne’s lullaby to Diarmaid, ‘Cotail bécan bécan béc’, I have begun to investigate the motif of sleep in the Gaelic tradition. My paper is very much a work in progress as I assemble examples of sleep as a road to dreams of arcane knowledge or of desired states, as an empowering rest before fighting, or of suspended animation leading to transformation and renewal. I will ask if such motifs should be linked to the symbolism of gestation before birth, night before day and winter before summer.
