The Egyptian desert is mainly associated with noisy all-inclusive resorts and drinks with little umbrellas. However, together with my interviewee, Kasia, we prove that there is a completely different world in the Marsa Alam region, hidden in the eco-friendly diving villages of Shagra, Nakari, and Lahami. Instead of hustle and bustle, there is peace and quiet; evenings are spent by the campfire, and wild reefs can be explored to your heart’s content right from the shore. But does giving up a classic hotel necessarily mean spartan conditions? What is the reality of a luxury tent on the edge of the desert?
