Skiing in Switzerland – Then & Now: Swiss winter tourism is undergoing gradual but significant changes. The snow line is rising, and the popularity of skiing is incomparable to what it once was. In the three-part series "Skiing in Switzerland," "Reporter" looks back at the glory days and the challenges of today. There was a time when every child skied, and the professionals on the slopes were the nation's heroes. Marie-Theres Nadig was just 17 years old when she unexpectedly won double gold at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Together with Bernhard Russi, who also brought home gold from Japan, she sent the country into a frenzy. Ski races on television became the nation's gathering place. "I'm Maite," Marie-Theres Nadig introduces herself at home in her sports shop in Flumserberg. This is where she learned to ski, and this is where she launched her international career. "Back then, there was nothing but skiing where we lived!" she says. She emulated her older brothers and spent every waking moment in the snow, hiking uphill and skiing downhill. "Those were different times. Young people have so many more opportunities today." Peter Müller and Vreni Schneider agree. In the 1980s, he became the best Swiss downhill skier, and Vreni Schneider the most successful female skier. Every child knew Peter and Vreni. "It was a crazy time," says Vreni Schneider. Reporter Kathrin Winzenried visited the stars of yesteryear and wanted to find out how much of a skiing spirit still lives within us. It may be true that the names of those days are no longer familiar to young people, and that ski races on television are no longer a collective experience. But as this girl from a Zurich ski camp puts it on the slopes in Elm: "I ski because it's fun."
