How to Flip Class - Flipped Learning or Flipped Classroom for Teachers
The flipped classroom is an essential idea for any blended or hybrid model of teaching and learning. Flipped learning simply means the setting of foundational learning as self study outside of lessons before the in class lesson takes place. The aim of it is to allow teaching in class to move more quickly to the higher order thinking skills. There are three things that are important to get right for flipped learning to work well. The out of lesson learning should be purely foundational. Stick to simple tasks like memorisation of definitions, or labelling of diagrams. This avoids misconceptions arising. It needs to be well organised with out of lesson learning closely relating to the learning in class. The lesson should be well planned otherwise students can become confused with exactly what is expected of them. The benefits of learning in this different way should be explained to the students, including how to use study videos or other resources effectively at home. This will give students confidence in the teaching and learning model that you are following. In practice it should allow the students more time to tackle the more challenging learning objectives in classrooms where they have access to the expert support of the subject specialist teacher. It works best where the teacher uses some kind of simple assessment of the foundational knowledge at the start of the lesson, or before the lesson, to gauge whether there needs to be a recap of that knowledge and understanding before the students move on to apply it to the higher order questions. I also recommend you consider whether the flipped learning model is the best choice for each particular group and each particular learning objective.
