One Month Later: What Being Laid Off at 63 Really Felt Like

It’s been one month since I was unexpectedly laid off at age 63. When I recorded my first video, everything was still very fresh. I was still in shock and trying to process what had happened after more than nine years with the company. Over the past month, I’ve gone through a range of emotions that I didn’t expect - from shock and questioning why I was selected, to gaining perspective and ultimately feeling a sense of freedom that surprised me. In this video, I share what each week after the layoff felt like, the lessons I’ve learned, and why this experience turned out to be much different than I initially imagined. I’ve also left some info and links below if you’ve been recently laid off. Chapters in this video: 00:00 Intro 00:23 Feeling shock and uncertainty on next steps 04:50 Questions and processing job loss 07:24 Gaining perspective 09:33 Feeling some freedom and moving on from go-go-go mode 10:59 A new beginning, taking one day at a time If you’re going through a layoff, retirement, career transition, or unexpected life change, I hope my experience reminds you that it’s okay to have mixed emotions and that sometimes difficult endings can lead to unexpected beginnings.
