ETE Conf 2025 | Make It Short, Make It Stick 40 strategies in 40 minutes

Presented by: John Russell, Lucy Delgadillo, Brent Thomas, and Marie Lund This session will present 40 concrete strategies to help our students and ourselves become more productive learners. The information comes from the book, Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning. This book uses research from the cognitive sciences, and it offers powerful strategies to increase memory and learning. We know that many common study habits used by our students, and many life-long learners, are less effective. Underlining, highlighting, rereading, cramming, and simple-minded repetition of skills and information create the illusion of knowledge but gains in learning are not sustainable (and the knowledge quickly erodes from memory). Science shows that more durable learning comes from self-testing, introducing desirable difficulties, interleaving practices, spacing knowledge effect, cue dependent learning, dynamic cue environments, etc.
