Panorama | O crescimento do vegetarianismo no Brasil | 11/07/2018

Today's Panorama reports on a recent survey by Ibope. Commissioned by the Brazilian Vegetarian Society, the survey reveals that there are 30 million people who follow a vegetarian diet. Of these 30 million, between 5 and 7 million are vegans. Those who declare themselves as non-vegetarians reach 81%. The survey was conducted in April 2018 in 102 Brazilian cities. In metropolitan areas, there has been an increase in the number of vegetarians. A survey conducted by Ibope in 2012, in these areas alone, indicated that 8% of people followed the diet. Today, this rate is 16% (slightly higher than the national average). The survey also showed the population's interest in more vegan products (free from any ingredients from animal products). More than half of those interviewed (55%) said they would consume more products if they were better indicated on the packaging. In capital cities, the rate of people interested in this type of diet rises to 65%. According to the survey, 60% of those interviewed said they would consume more vegan products if they were the same price as the foods they are used to eating.
