Compared to the more meditative St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion is more dramatic and emotionally charged. The action unfolds in fewer individual scenes, but those that do appear are intense and full of dramatic tension—such as Peter’s denial or Jesus entrusting his mother to the care of St. John. The reflective and spiritual elements are found primarily in the arias and in the deeply expressive chorales, which offer the voice of the sympathetic onlooker—often echoing sentiments that seem to belong to Bach himself.
