Bucaramanga (Bucaramanga) is a Colombian municipality, capital of the department of Santander. It is located in the northeast of the country on the Cordillera Oriental, a branch of the Andes mountain range, on the banks of the Río de Oro. Bucaramanga has a population of 625,114 and, together with Floridablanca, Girón, and Piedecuesta, makes up the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area with a total of 1,304,288 inhabitants, making it the fifth most populated urban agglomeration in the country. It is located 384 km from Bogotá, the country's capital. As the capital city of the department of Santander, Bucaramanga is home to the offices of the Santander Governor's Office, the Departmental Assembly, the sectional headquarters of the Prosecutor's Office, the Administrative Court of Santander, the Sectional Council of the Judiciary of Santander, and the Sectional Commission of Judicial Discipline of Santander. Additionally, the Superior Court of the Judicial District of Bucaramanga is located within its jurisdiction. Along with being the capital of Santander, Bucaramanga holds the title of capital and development center of the Metropolitan Province. Bucaramanga is connected to the other cities in the country by road; for air transport, it has the Palonegro International Airport. The economic sectors, ranked according to their share within the city's economy, are commerce, services, and industry; the economy of the Bucaramanga metropolitan area is the fifth largest in the country. The unemployment rate for the Bucaramanga metropolitan area for the period June-August 2022 was 9.2%. In 2015, a World Bank report ranked it as one of the most competitive cities with the best quality of life in Latin America.
