Russia still has a way to go to end institutionalisation and many people with special needs are often obliged to live with up to 1000 others in huge care homes, cut off from the outside world. Nina is 28 and has spent most of her life in care homes, but with the pandemic, everything changed. When Moscow went into lockdown, Arina, a charity volunteer invited Nina to live with her. For the past few months, Nina has been enjoying a new life with Arina. When restrictions were lifted, Nina started joining Arina on outings with other young people. She is discovering for the first time what it's like to be young and have a normal life. The charity Arina volunteers for wants to help more people like Nina to move out of care homes and into assisted living, to give vulnerable adults more freedom and independence while still being looked after.
