Notably, the 01M transmission lacks an internal chain and doesn't have a dipstick, a design choice by Volkswagen to prevent owners from inadvertently adding incorrect or subpar transmission fluid. On the other hand, the 01P transmission variant is tailored for minivans and minibuses, capable of handling higher torque loads.
