The Terrifying Truth About Time Inside a Black Hole

Time is not the same everywhere. The atomic clocks aboard the GPS satellites above you run thirty-eight microseconds ahead of the watch on your wrist every day, and every navigation system on Earth is built to correct for it. That correction is the doorway into something far stranger. At the event horizon of a black hole, the same equations predict that time does not merely slow. It stops. This is a slow, long-form documentary for the hours before sleep. We follow the equation from Karl Schwarzschild, who solved it in an artillery position on the Russian front in nineteen fifteen and died before he understood what he had found, through Roger Penrose proving that singularities are unavoidable, through the LIGO detection of two black holes colliding a billion light-years away, and out to the plasma we have now watched orbiting the edge of our own galactic center at nearly a third of the speed of light.
