Vladimir Monomakh is one of the most "proper" princes in school history. A wise ruler. A conqueror of the Polovtsians. Author of the famous "Instruction." A prince who renounced power for the sake of order and then came to Kyiv as a savior. An almost ideal image: strong, just, pious, and a statesman. But if you look at the events more closely, this image becomes much more complex. Why didn't Monomakh take Kyiv in 1093, even though he had the strength and resources to do so? Was it a noble refusal or a political calculation? How did the defeat at Stugna and the struggle with the Polovtsians help him become the main military leader of Rus'? What really happened in Kyiv in 1113, when, after Svyatopolk's death, the city was on the brink of rebellion? Why wasn't Monomakh's Charter a concern for the poor, but an attempt to restart the economy, curb moneylenders, and prevent people from falling en masse into debt? "And can one trust a ruler's impeccable reputation if the main text about his virtues was written by the ruler himself?" In this episode, we examine Vladimir Monomakh not as a cardboard figure from a textbook, but as a living politician of Ancient Rus'. His renunciation of Kyiv, the war with the Polovtsians, the Congress of Lyubech, the campaign of 1111, the Kiev Uprising, the Charter on Reductions, Purchases, and Debts, the "Instruction to Children," and the later legend of Monomakh's Cap. This is a story about how the reputation of an ideal ruler is forged.
