Why Chris DeGarmo Walked Away From Queensrÿche

Chris DeGarmo helped define Queensrÿche’s sound, wrote some of the band’s most important songs and then walked away at only 34 years old. Instead of chasing another major rock career, he chose a dramatically different life as a professional pilot. In this video, we examine DeGarmo’s importance to Queensrÿche, the pressure and internal dysfunction surrounding his departure, the troubled Hear in the Now Frontier era and why his life after the band may reveal more than any public explanation he has ever given. Was Chris DeGarmo driven away by band politics and burnout—or had he simply reached the point where the music industry no longer offered the life he wanted? We also look at his selective returns to music, including his work with Jerry Cantrell, Alice in Chains, Queensrÿche’s Tribe album and The Rue with his daughter Rylie. Chris DeGarmo is often mentioned alongside Vito Bratta: two highly respected guitarists who left while fans still wanted more. But DeGarmo’s story may not be about disappearing. It may be about redefining success. ▶️ Watch my Vito Bratta documentary here:    • Vito Bratta Rejected His Entire Identity —...   ▶️ Subscribe for more documentaries about the guitarists, bands and human stories behind classic rock and metal:    / @joehansonguitar   ▶️ If you're an intermediate guitarist who struggles with lead guitar skills, check out my teaching channel Six String Science:    / @6stringscience   #ChrisDeGarmo #Queensryche #GuitarDocumentary Chapters 0:00 Opening 0:59 Why his departure mattered 1:58 The warning signs 3:08 Success changes the band 4:30 Did band politics drive him out? 5:42 Why flying made sense 6:51 He never really quit music 7:51 Music on his own terms 8:50 Conclusion
