2-week-old baby loons!
Loon babies can swim the day they hatch, but they will hop onto their parent’s back for a ride until they are 3 weeks old. We watched these loon chicks swim with their parents and climb aboard them to stretch, snooze, and dip their beaks into the water. We found this Common Loon (Gavia immer) family at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on 9 June 2026.
