Montevideo is the Perfect City to Slow Down

Montevideo might not be the flashiest city in South America — and that’s exactly why we loved it. After weeks of traveling across Argentina and Uruguay, we were exhausted and needed a reset day. Instead of racing through attractions, we embraced slow travel in Montevideo, wandering through Ciudad Vieja, visiting cozy bookstores, relaxing in cafés, and enjoying incredible local food. In this vlog, we spend two chill days in Montevideo, Uruguay, exploring historic streets, discovering hidden gems, and showing why this underrated capital is the perfect place to slow down at the end of a trip. We start with delicious empanadas at El Rincón Empanadas, then take a walking tour of Ciudad Vieja, stopping at places like Mercado del Puerto, Palacio Taranco, Plaza Zabala, and Peatonal Sarandí. Along the way we explore some of Montevideo’s beautiful bookstores including Librería Linardi y Risso and Librería Más Puro Verso, one of the most stunning bookstores in the city. Of course, no slow travel day is complete without great food. We visit the famous bakery Confitería y Rotisería 25 de Mayo, enjoy coffee from Café Salvo in Plaza Independencia, and have dinner at Mojo Carnes y Las Brasas. On day two we grab breakfast at El Copacabana, explore the Museo del Arte Precolombino e Indígena, and visit the powerful Museo Andes 1972, dedicated to the famous Uruguayan plane crash survival story. To end our trip on the most relaxed note possible, we pick up dinner and dulce de leche cookies from Fresh Market, head back to our hotel room, make tea, and wind down after an incredible South America journey. If you’re planning a trip to Uruguay or looking for a Montevideo travel guide, this video will show you some of the best things to do in Montevideo, where to eat, and why sometimes the best way to experience a city is simply to slow down.
