What Happened to the 15 Men Who Planned the Wannsee Conference?
During the Second World War, on a frozen January morning in 1942, 15 high-ranking Nazi officials gathered at a luxurious villa in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee. They did not come to argue, debate, or propose alternatives. They came to coordinate genocide. Led by Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most feared figures in the Nazi regime, the meeting would lay out the framework for what the Nazis called the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”—a euphemism for the planned extermination of every Jew in Europe. By the time of the Wannsee Conference, mass shootings by the Einsatzgruppen in places like Babyn Yar and Kamianets-Podilskyi had already claimed tens of thousands of lives. Yet for the Nazi leadership, this method was deemed inefficient. What was needed was a more systematic, industrialized approach to mass murder. In cold bureaucratic language, the men at Wannsee discussed train timetables, sterilization plans, and how to define who was a Jew. They spoke not of killing, but of “evacuation” and “resettlement.” No one objected. Within weeks, the first gas chambers at Bełżec and Sobibor began operation. Treblinka followed soon after. Within a year, millions were dead. This video traces the chilling planning and deadly consequences of the Wannsee Conference. It also follows what became of the men in that room - many fled, some died in battle, others were hanged or committed suicide. Eichmann would escape to Argentina, but was later captured and tried in Jerusalem. Heydrich was assassinated in Prague. Bühler, Lange, Schöngarth - all met fitting ends. The Wannsee Conference reminds us that genocide can be orchestrated not just by monsters with weapons, but by educated men with titles, pens, and dinner menus. Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp.
