From Combat Diesel Mechanic to SWAT Sniper: Gabe Smith’s Raw PTSD Battle
It’s June 2026, and as we kick off PTSD Awareness Month 2026 first responder stories, I’m sharing the raw truth about the moment my 30-year police career finally caught up with me. I spent decades burying the trauma of being inside the most devastatingly intimate moments of people’s lives—like the day I found 2-year-old Dana Sakorski in that pool. For a year after I medically retired, I was consumed by a medically retired police officer depression and rage recovery that I didn't understand, until I heard Eddie Penny recount the Extortion 17 incident. Hearing about the 17 SEALs lost on that Chinook in Afghanistan forced me to face my own ghosts and realize I was still wearing the "Armor" that was destroying my family. In this episode of The Resilient Warrior Nation, I sit down with Gabriel Smith, a former Army veteran and Reno PD SWAT sniper who left law enforcement in 2026 to help others through his work with Precision Resilience Training Group and the Resilient Lives Foundation. Gabe opens up about the weight of his deployments in 2003 and 2005, his battle with opioid addiction fueled by the military medical system, and the devastating loss of his friend Patrick to suicide. We dive deep into the Eddie Penny Unafraid impact on veteran mental health and how removing the emotional armor after a law enforcement career is a tactical necessity for survival, not a sign of weakness. From the streets of Reno, Nevada, to training at SOS Stronghold Solutions in Destin, Florida, we discuss why healing from suppressed trauma for retired first responders requires a holistic shift—not just another pharmaceutical band-aid. Gabe and I are living proof that transitioning to civilian life after 30 years of police service is possible if you're willing to shed the ego and seek the help you need. Whether it’s through fitness, community, or therapies like Ketamine and Psilocybin, our mission is to ensure you never feel alone in the dark. Watch until the end to see how you can start your own journey of self-forgiveness today. On the newest podcast episode of The Resilient Warrior nation, Mike speaks with Gabriel (Gabe) Smith who currently lives in Reno, NV where he was born and raised. Gabe is the owner and co-founder of Precision Resilience Training Group and the non-profit The Resilient Lives Foundation. Gabe speaks about his tumultuous childhood and resultant trauma growing up, his drug usage, and his eventual suicide attempt. He decided to get clean and join the military as a way of "getting out" of his then current situation. Gabe Joined the Army in July 2002 as a Bradley Systems Maintainer AKA Diesel Mechanic. Gabe Deployed to Iraq twice, the 1st deployment being 2003 and again in 2005. Gabe eventually left the Army in 2008. Bounced from job to job for several years. Did everything from heavy equipment mechanic to tattoo artist to security. Hired on with the Reno Police Department in 2016. Shortly after joined the SWAT Team and Sniper team. 9 Years total with the department. 7 on SWAT and 5 as a sniper. Gabe left law enforcement in 2026 to pursue both businesses full time.
