In 1890, while serving in the Indian Civil Service, he entered into conflict with the governor on the issue of peasants' rights. His antipathy towards the colonial rulers was mingled with his uncommon musical talent, and this is reflected in many of his nationalist historical songs and plays. However, he did not reject the West totally as revealed in his melding of Bengali lyrics and western music. Dwijendralal's songs, characterised by a rare sense of joy, have become an essential part of the Bengali tradition.
