Blood & Dark: Female Vampires & Blood-Drinkers of World Mythology | A Sleep Story

This episode is part of The Veil Weaver's ongoing series exploring witches, sorceresses and magical women across world mythology and folklore. Each episode takes one tradition and goes slowly — turning the old stories over, asking what the sources said and what they didn't say, and what the silence might contain. Each episode stands alone. You can arrive here from anywhere. Tonight's episode is different from the others in the series. We are not visiting one tradition. We are traveling across all of them — because tonight's figure appears in all of them, independently, without contact, without shared language, across every ocean and every mountain range and every stretch of recorded time. Every culture on earth has told a story about a woman who drinks blood. Not a man. A woman. Always. She has a thousand names. She lives in the oldest cities of ancient Mesopotamia, in the dense forests of medieval Poland, in the humid darkness of Southeast Asian nights, on the storm-lit peaks of the Scottish Highlands, in the sugar cane fields of Trinidad, at the crossroads of the Aztec world. She is feared, appeased, and sometimes — not always, but sometimes — quietly pitied. Tonight we ask why. Why this figure, everywhere. Why always female. Why blood specifically — not simply death or danger, but this very particular taking of something vital from inside the body. The episode moves through seven traditions across five continents: 00:00 Intro 05:26 Lamashtu and Lilith in ancient Mesopotamia, where the oldest written records of the blood-drinking woman exist and where protective amulets were placed in every home against her. 17:34 Lamia, Empusa and the Roman Strix, where the figure moves from mythology into accusation — from the creature outside the community to the woman inside it. 26:33 The Strzyga of Poland, the double-souled woman born to die twice. 35:22 The Baobhan Sith of the Scottish Highlands, beautiful and lethal on the moorland at night. 44:53 The Churel, Langsuir, Penanggalan and Manananggal of South and Southeast Asia, where grief at dying in childbirth produced some of the most vivid and most heartbreaking figures in all of tonight's journey. 01:01:52 The Obayifo of West Africa and the Soucouyant of the Caribbean, where an ancient tradition survived the Atlantic crossing and found new form. 01:14:16 And the Cihuateteo of the Aztec world — the women who died in childbirth and were honoured as fallen warriors and feared at the crossroads on the five dangerous days. What the traditions share, underneath the horror, is grief. The hunger that was first a love. These figures are not simply monsters. They are what the monster contains. Settle in. We begin where everything begins — in the oldest cities in the world, between two rivers, where she was already there before the writing began.
