She lives in the oldest cities of ancient Mesopotamia, in the dense forests of medieval Poland, in the humid darkness of Southeast Asian nights, on the storm-lit peaks of the Scottish Highlands, in the sugar cane fields of Trinidad, at the crossroads of the Aztec world. She is feared, appeased, and sometimes — not always, but sometimes — quietly pitied. Tonight we ask why. Why this figure, everywhere. Why always female. Why blood specifically — not simply death or danger, but this very particular taking of something vital from inside the body.
