Bilhões em Jogo: Porque o Mundo está de Olho no Amapá?
Oil is one of the most important products for the Brazilian economy, as our country is no less than the eighth-largest producer on the planet, producing more than 4 million barrels every day, which consequently generates billions in profits that contribute to boosting the national GDP. However, even with all this impressive production, authorities have begun to worry about the future of our nation's oil sector, given that, according to several specialized studies, these figures are expected to decline in the next five years, creating a true race against time to try to find new reserves to stay on top. And it was precisely in this alarming scenario that Petrobras managed to discover the ideal location to solve this problem, as a small Brazilian state possesses such an impressive amount of oil that it promises to generate more than 300,000 jobs and transform Brazil into the fourth-largest oil power in the world, behind only Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States. Although it doesn't have the largest reserves, Brazil is the largest oil producer in all of Latin America, surpassing even Venezuela, which for many years held regional dominance, demonstrating that this sector is growing at a surprising rate in our country. However, even with this impressive growth, some studies have indicated that our current reserves will likely not be able to sustain the same level until 2030, requiring tireless searches to find new reserves to maintain production. And it didn't take long for a solution to be found, as in 2023, Petrobras announced that it had discovered enormous oil and natural gas reserves on the Brazilian equatorial margin, which is essentially an area stretching between the northeast and north of Brazil and until recently was considered unlikely. It also announced that it intended to begin exploration as soon as possible. And according to those responsible, the research indicates that this coast that extends from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá has several characteristics that indicate the presence of a vast reserve of oil and gas, and that the vast majority of this concentration is located mainly in the Amapá territory.
