The Brians 1 Penitentiary Center, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, about 30 kilometers outside Barcelona. A mixed-gender facility holding approximately 1,000 inmates. The first papal visit ever to a prison on Spanish soil. Pope John Paul II visited Spain five times. He never went to a Spanish prison. Pope Benedict XVI came. He never went to a Spanish prison. Pope Francis never visited Spain at all. Until this Wednesday, no Pope in history had stepped through the gates of any Spanish penitentiary. The visit lasted about 30 minutes. Approximately 80 inmates from three different prisons — Brians 1, Brians 2, and Wad Ras — were gathered in the auditorium of Brians 1, the room that on Sunday mornings becomes the prison chapel. Father Jesús Bel, a Mercedarian priest who has spent 40 years as a prison chaplain, welcomed the Pope. The Mercedarian Order was founded in Barcelona in 1218, specifically to free Christian captives.
