The Front for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda – Cabindan Armed Forces, known as FLEC-FAC, is a movement fighting for the independence of Cabinda, located between the two Congos. FLEC-FAC emerged amidst the desire for self-determination of the people of Cabinda, which historically was a separate protectorate, according to the Treaty of Simulambuco, signed in 1885. The organization argues that Cabinda should never have been integrated into Angolan territory after independence from Portugal. Over the years, FLEC-FAC has maintained a military campaign against the Angolan government, claiming that the people of Cabinda deserve self-determination and control over their own resources.
