Dialogues from the Scriptures - Session 1 - Yama-Nachiketas Samvada - Br. Ved Chaitanya
Saṁvāda – Dialogues from the Scriptures are short series of four dialogues chosen from four different types of Hindu scriptures (śruti, smṛti, itihāsa and saint literature) showing the importance of saṁvāda in Sanātana literature as the easiest way to transfer knowledge from guru to śiṣya. Four dialogues covered here are: 1. Śruti prasthāna- Nachiketā and Yamarāja saṁvāda: This beautiful story of Nachiketā comes in the Kaṭhopaniṣad of Yajurveda. In this highly inspiring story, innocent and knowledgeable boy, Naciketas is the student and Yamarāja is the Brahmavidyācharya. 2. Smṛti prasthāna- Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna saṁvāda: The unique dialogue between Jagadguru Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna as student, takes place on the battlefield in between the two armies of Kurus. Famously known as Gītā, it is the summary of all the scriptural knowledge that a Hindu should try to get and practise. 3. Itihāsa - Mahābhārata’s Yakṣa and Yudhiṣṭhira saṁvāda: Also called as Yakṣapraśna, which comes under Vana parva of Mahābhārata, is the dialogue between Yakṣa who is the teacher and Yudhiṣṭhira who is the student. Its exceptionality lies in the fact that here, teacher is asking questions and student is answering with the purpose of making the teaching accessible to all through this dialogue. 4. Saint literature- Samartha Ramadas Swami’s Manache Shlok (Marathi): The saṁvāda here, is between the Buddhi (intellect) and Manas (mind). Intellect is the teacher guiding the mind towards the right path of devotion and spirituality. About the Teacher: Br. Ved Chaitanya ji is a Sanskrit scholar who studied the Shastra in traditional gurukula education system at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Chinmaya Mission, Powai and is pursuing PhD from Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth after having completed his MA in Sanskrit. He stood first, in India and in the world, in two Sanskrit exams conducted by the Cambridge University. This has been made possible by the generous support of interested seekers.
