Fantasie Overture On Antigone D.16(Score)(2024)

Antigone, is a fantasy overture like its predecessors such as Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet. The music is based on the play with the same name by Sophocles, which is about a princess, Antigone, who was sentenced to death by her uncle, king Creon after she buried her deceased brother Polynices. The play is a sequel to the infamous Oedipus the king. In this piece, several sections of the book is expressed with music, such as the burial of Polynices at 0:08 (which is a recurring motif throughout the piece) , Antigone’s opposition to her uncle Creon(Allegro ma non troppo) at 3:21 and the love of Antigone and Haemon(Andante con moto) at 5:42 and 13:05(this part symbolizes Antigone’s death and Haemon’s suicide).
