【汗水節 Ashimiji Bushi】 沖縄民謡 三線 Okinawa Minyo & Sanshin

Ashimiji Bushi (Sweat Song) is a well-known traditional Okinawan folk song from 1928. It was created through a public contest in Okinawa, with lyrics written by Nakamoto Minoru and music composed by Miyara Chōhō. It is a classic example of the "new folk songs" (新民謡) from that era. The song celebrates the deep satisfaction that comes from honest hard work and steady effort. It carries a positive message about the rewards of diligence, saving little by little, staying young at heart through labor, raising children well, and contributing to the wider community. Rather than complaining about hard work, it presents labor as something uplifting and meaningful. The song has remained popular for nearly a century, especially because of the values it reflects during times of economic difficulty. Here are the English translations of the six verses: When someone works hard and sweats for it, they feel really happy inside — other people who don’t work like that can’t understand how good it feels. Refrain: Come on, let’s work with care and love! Save one rin (unit of currency) a day, and in a hundred days you’ll have five kan (larger unit) — don’t waste it, that’s what the old saying teaches. If you work every morning and evening and keep saving, the money piles up over time — it grows stronger year after year. If you stay positive and keep working hard day after day, even when you’re fifty or sixty years old you’ll still feel like you’re only twenty. Forget about getting older — raise the child you brought into the world, teach them reading and writing, and help them learn as much as possible.
