Modern zoological gardens have been concerned with securing the population of this rare subspecies for many decades. Since 2010, the wild population has been steadily increasing through a combination of ex situ and in situ measures. The Asiatic lions within the conservation breeding program, in which the Cologne Zoo ( @Koelner_Zoo ) also takes part, are considered to be the only population of the animals outside of Asia. The animals must be pure genetics if you want to return them to nature. Therefore, genetics plays a major role and not - as was previously thought - morphology. There are around 40 husbandries of this subspecies in Europe, five of them in Germany. Cologne Zoo is committed to this subspecies and ensures its survival. But the husbandry also has an important educational aspect, because many people think that lions only live in Africa. The lions of Asia are hardly known.
