My Ruth Stout Garden is Full of Slugs & Snails

Many people who adopt the Ruth Stout or "Back to Eden" or permaculture approach - all employing mulched soil - are pleased with their initial results & the lack of a need to till, weed, water or fertilize; but sometimes in year two or three, the pests start to show up in serious numbers. The reality is that perpetually mulched soil is a great place to live if you're a snail or slug - so when you create that ideal environment, the pests proliferate... but all is not lost! You can work around it, many plants are "slug proof" - and many plants become more "slug-proof" as they mature. Also, the abundance of pests eventually leads to an abundance of things that eat pests - so eventually a balance is reached.
