【地震発生】5年ぶり！奥穂高岳からジャンダルムを越え、西穂高岳へテント泊縦走！の予定でしたが、地震直撃により涙の撤退。暗闇に響き渡る落石の音に怯えながら過ごした夜。自然は美しく、そして恐ろしい。

Hello everyone! This time, I started from Kamikochi and camped at Hotakadake Sanso. On the second day, I was planning to go from Okuhotakadake to Gendarme, then to Nishihotakadake, and then back to Kamikochi... As you all know, the recent earthquake in the Hida region on September 19, 2021, caused numerous rockfalls. It was pitch black, there was little information available, and the earthquake swarm caused multiple shaking, causing rockfalls in multiple locations. We prioritized safety and decided to withdraw from this hike after reaching Hotakadake Sanso. I was inside Hotakadake Sanso when the earthquake struck, and felt a sudden, upward jolt along with the rumbling of the ground. I didn't think it was an earthquake at all... I heard screams from outside, so at first I thought someone had slipped or a rock had hit the hut! Of course, the people around Hotakadake Sanso were panicked and upset. All we could do was watch the rocks avalanche toward Karasawa, and not knowing what was happening below, it was truly scary. Thinking that the first earthquake would be the end, we enjoyed watching the sunset with a strange sense of tension. However, there were multiple earthquakes after that until around 8 PM, and each time there was another rockfall, making for a terrifying night. The next day, there were several more earthquakes and rockfalls, so we canceled our plans and I'm really glad that everyone was able to descend safely and without injury. The route between Okuho and Nishiho is a wavy line, and is also known as the expert course. Five years ago, when I did a traverse, the party behind us caused a large rockfall, and if that party had gone ahead just before, we would have been hit by the rockfall, and I'm sure our injuries would have been more than just severe. It's highly likely that the rockfall caused by the earthquake has increased the amount of loose rock, so there's no need to go out of your way to take a route that's already risky when the risks are increased. I'll try again someday! This time, I wasn't able to record the rockfall on video, but I thought the situation could be conveyed from audio alone, so I uploaded the video.
