It’s one of the most unique driving experiences in Alaska.” You ease toward the entrance of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, headlights reflecting off a massive concrete portal carved into Maynard Mountain. Built in 1943 during World War II by the U.S. Army, the tunnel was originally a railroad passage created to supply the ice-free port on Prince William Sound., were we found Alaska’s most beautiful RV camp site. We took the Alaska Railroad to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and Hiked into the Chugach Forest to see the spectacular Spencer Glacier. SPENCER GLACIER HIKE The Alaska Railroad Train leaves Whittier and stops at the Girdwood station to pickup additional passengers before continuing deep within the Chugach National Forest. About a mile and a half from the Spencer Glacier the train makes a “whistle stop” to allow passengers to disembark and hike to about 1.5 miles through the forest to view the glacier up close The train returns 3 hours later for the return trip to Girdwood and Whittier.
