Saipan is said to be the place where "the Japanese disappeared." When I actually visited, my impression was a little different from what I had imagined. While there are rows of huge resorts and casinos, right next to them are areas where traces of a war from 80 years ago still remain. Saipan as a tourist destination and the weight of Japanese history coexist simultaneously.
